For first-time visitors to Tainan who wish to experience the elegance and prosperity of the Japanese colonial period, Hayashi Department Store is one of the city’s must-see landmarks.
 

Hayashi Department Store—locally known as the “Five-Story Building”—is a historic department store located in Tainan’s West Central District.
It opened on December 5, 1932, in what was then Suehirocho 2-Chome during the Japanese era. It was the second department store in Taiwan, the first in southern Taiwan, and the only one in Taiwan that once featured a Shinto shrine. The elevator was an architectural innovation at the time.

The unique architectural style and modern facilities, along with its rich history, have made Hayashi an irreplaceable cultural symbol of Tainan.
Today, it mainly sells creative and cultural products. Each floor is themed around “Tainan Lifestyle,” offering a different selection of goods and experiences.

Personally, Hayashi Department Store is my favorite. Every visit to Tainan, I always make sure to stop by. The wide variety and unique products make shopping here a joyful cultural experience every time!
